For at least two weeks now, people have been saying to me, “I can’t believe the summer’s over.”
When they do this, I stick my fingers in my ears and yell, “La-la-la-la. I can’t HEAR you!” as loud as I can.
Because for me, the summer is never, ever over until after Labor Day. Ever. I am such a fanatic about this that when we had our cottage in Marlboro, MA, because I couldn’t face moving home on Labor Day, we would stay out there and drive our kids to Newton for that first partial week of school. Which was insane. Because I am, on this topic.
Yes, the days are noticeably shorter. And the nights cooler. (Great sleeping weather, we always say.) And smart people, particularly those like us who no longer have kids returning to school, know that September is one of the nicest months in Maine.
So please, don’t go telling me the summer’s over.
To celebrate the last gasp, I thought we could just feast our eyes on the gorgeousness (gorgeousity?) of Maine in summer.

It’s not that I don’t love fall. In fact, what New Englander doesn’t love fall. I just not ready for the summer to be over!

We’re just back from two lovely weeks in Brooksville, where we were surrounded by natural beauty every moment. To keep some perspective, I’m forcing myself to pay attention to the specialness that surrounds me in the day-to-day now that I’m back in Portland. Historic buildings. Casco Bay. Morning glories on the trellis in my back yard.
It’s all good.
Yes, Brenda–It is about the beauty of everyday and not getting so caught in living in a place you’re not actually living in that place.

Thelma–I love Manhattan, too. I has childhood memories because my grandparents lived there when I was growing up. And at one time both my kids did as well. Due to work, I had an apartment on 48th street for 2009 and was awakened on Friday mornings in the dark by kids screaming for the Today Show concerts. I loved every minute of my time in NYC and still miss that apartment.
Thank you for the photos, Barb. I have GOT to get up to Maine in the next couple of years. I’ve never been, even though we’ve lived up here 30+ years now. September sounds like a great opportunity, but it can’t be this year because Sept. is already too booked up. I think some of the best weather of the year in New England happens between Labor Day and Halloween.

And I agree, except for the occasional deluge (and last year’s freak snowstorm), Labor Day to Halloween is a very special time in New England.
Born in Toledo, Ohio and spent the last almost 60 years in California, but yes, New England is very appealing. Thanks for sharing these photos that make me want to visit the area again and for a longer period of time. I still flashback on trips to the East with a smile on my face. Never been to Maine but I never say never. It must be very good atmosphere for writers 🙂
gorgeous pictures. They made me very nostalgic for the beauty that is New England. I live on the West Coast, and it is very beautiful, but not the same.
Judy and Lil–I agree, the west coast is beautiful but not the same. Lots of west coasters are attracted to Maine because it’s one of the few places in the east where rocks meet sea. But even at that, it feels different than the Pacific ports of SF, Seattle, Vancouver, Sydney that I’ve visited. In Maine the rocks seem settled in and worn down. On the Pacific the rocks seem wild and new.
Great pictures Barb. They really transport me back to Maine. I want to sit in one of those white adirondacks and finish my book which is due back to the library tomorrow. Thanks for sharing and I agree that we all need to block our ears this weekend and say la, la, la and just enjoy every minute of it.
