Escaping it All on the Maine Art Museum Trail by Julia Spencer-Fleming

The past week has been fun, frantic…and undeniably stressful. The upcoming weeks aren’t looking any better, with holiday planning and shopping and socializing, with midterms and finals and end-of-quarter reports. So this post is going to be very light on words and concepts. Instead, we’re going to take a tour of Maine’s best art museums. Best of all? You don’t have to fight the traffic on Route 1.

First stop: The Ogunquit Museum of American Art.

Charles H. Woodbury, Deco Wave (Dancing Wave),1914

Head a short way north to the Portland Museum of Art…

Juan Gomez, Figure and Leaves, 2009

Inland to Lewiston, we come to the Bates College Museum of Art….

Joel Babb, Powers on the River - Androscoggin Ariel, 1995

Andrea Sulzer, untitled (detail), 2011

Then back to the coast for what may be Maine’s most well-known museum, the Farnsworth.

James Fitzgerald, Fishermen, 1923

Walter Lofthouse Dean, On the Deep Sea, 1901

Northward to the Colby College of Art…

Edward Hopper, House with a Big Pine, 1935

…and finally, we end at the University of Maine Museum of Art in Bangor.

Ahhh. Don’t you feel more relaxed? I do. Who’s up for a cup of tea at the museum cafe?
